Servos are designed for different torque, speed, size, weight and precision. As far as connecting the servos to the receiver, the ones currently manufactured (with small exclusions) are compatible.
Futaba uses two types of connectors - "standard" J-connector (pictured below) and a microconnector designated as G-connector which uses the same pin/wire lineup but is smaller in size.
Airtronics switched from their old proprietary connector lineup (Old Airtronics in the pictures below) to their current Z-type connector (also pictured below). They use the same plug/connector shells but different pin/wire lineup. Do not plug in old Airtronics servo connectors in "standard" receivers and vice-versa as this will damage the servo. Either extract and reinsert the pins/sockets to match the new/current connector line up or use adapter wires.
